Dr. Brett began his career as a medical officer in the Canadian Forces including service with the United Nations in the former Yugoslavia. He has been practising sport and exercise medicine for 20 years and has been a team physician for the Calgary Flames, the Calgary Hitmen and the Calgary Cannons. He has also travelled internationally with Hockey Canada and the Canadian Men’s Rugby team as well as covering amateur sporting events in his home town of Calgary.

Dr. Brett has a special interest in childhood physical activity and has been actively promoting healthy lifestyles for children for two decades. His practice involves the diagnosis and management of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries in patients of all ages and athletic abilities. He has also completed a certificate program as a personal fitness trainer.

Dr. Meeuwisse is a sport medicine physician and is the Medical Director of the National Hockey League (NHL).  He is also an Expert Member, Medical and Scientific Group of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical Commission.

He obtained his Medical degree from the University of Western Ontario and then did a Fellowship in Sport Medicine at the University of British Columbia, where he also completed a Master’s degree in exercise physiology.  Upon coming to Calgary he obtained his PhD in clinical epidemiology, focusing on sport injury prediction and prevention.  He went on to receive his CASEM Diploma in Sport Medicine and a CFPC Certificate of Added Competence (CAC) in Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Dr. Meeuwisse is the founder of the Sport Injury Prevention Research Centre in the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, which was one of the original 4 research centres in the world recognized by the IOC.  He currently serves as a Senior Associate Editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine -Injury Prevention and Health Protection.  He enjoys cycling, cross country skiing and just about any outdoor activity; preferably with family and friends.

Dr. Darrell Yip is a Sport Medicine Physician practicing in Calgary, Alberta.  He earned his first degree in physiotherapy from the University of British Columbia and has worked as part of a multidisciplinary team caring for acute stroke and rehabilitation patients.  In addition to his work in the hospital, Dr Yip worked as a physiotherapist in an outpatient setting providing care for patients with musculoskeletal injuries.  He was also involved in providing home care physiotherapy for patients with mobility impairments.

Darrell completed Medical School at the University of British Columbia with a residency in Family Medicine through the University of Calgary. He has obtained the CASEM Diploma in Exercise and Sport Medicine.  As a Sport Medicine Physician, he has worked with a variety of organizations and sports including: Canada Men’s National Rugby Union Team, Canada Men’s National Para Hockey Team, Calgary Hitmen, Calgary Roughnecks, and Calgary Combative Sports Commission (mixed martial arts, boxing, and kickboxing).

Dr. Yip has been involved with sport since a young age and was a member of the Canadian Men’s Junior National Field Hockey Team and University of British Columbia Men’s Varsity Field Hockey Team.  He is a NCCP certified level 3 coach and has worked with athletes at the local, provincial, and national levels.

In addition to Innovative, Chris works in the Emergency Departments in Calgary (FMC/SHC) and volunteers at sporting events or ski hills around Calgary. He was born and raised in Calgary, where he completed a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and Medical School (2013). He completed his FRCP Emergency Medicine and Fellowship in Sports Medicine in Victoria BC. He has completed the CASEM Diploma in Sports Medicine as well as the International Olympic Committee Diploma in Sports Medicine.  

His interests are in paediatric sports medicine, wilderness/austere medicine, ultrasound and medical education. He is a native Calgarian and avidly loves trail running, nearly every sport, and any mountain adventure - preferably off any marked trail.

DR. MARCUS ROBINSON

Dr. Marcus Robinson is a former engineer and a current Sport Medicine Physician practicing in Calgary, Canada. He earned his first degree in Materials Engineering from the University of British Columbia before working as a design engineer for IBIS Cycles in Santa Rosa, California. Following that, he shifted his focus to the aerospace industry working on projects for the Boeing Company and NASA.

Dr. Robinson then pursued a Master’s Degree in Biomechanics and Biomechanical Engineering and worked in biomechanics labs in Vancouver and in Hong Kong. Upon returning to Canada, Dr. Robinson was able to transfer his skills in motion capture to the entertainment industry. He was the motion capture studio lead for several movies and video games including Barbie: the Princess and the Pauper, Stuart Little 3, and Tony Hawk.

Dr. Robinson completed Medical School at UBC, his residency in Family Medicine in Calgary, and a fellowship in Sport and Exercise Medicine in Calgary. As a Sport Medicine Physician, he is the Chief Medical Officer for the Calgary Roughnecks (2014 - present), Team Physician for the Calgary Hitmen (2015 - present) and Team Physician for the Cavalry FC (2021 - present). He previously served at Team Physician for the Calgary Stampeders (2015 - 2017). He has also been part of the core medical team for multi-sport games including the PanAm Games (Toronto 2015), FISU World University Games (Taiwan 2017, Korea 2015, China 2011), and Canada Games (Prince George 2015, Sherbrooke 2013).

In his spare time, Dr. Robinson enjoys crate digging for records to add to his collection of 60’s soul records, wearing out his granny gear on mountain passes, and exploring the city 42.2 km at a time.

DR. Puja Chopra

Emergency Medicine PHYSICIAN

Dr. Chopra is a Calgary based Emergency Physician. She completed her medical training at the University of Calgary Medical school and then completed her Post-Graduate Medical Residency in Emergency Medicine in Calgary as well. Dr. Chopra enjoys teaching medical students and residents in her role as clinical lecturer at the University of Calgary. Her credentials include; Fellowship in Emergency Medicine, Diploma of Sports and Exercise Medicine, Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Science Double Honors. 

 

Dr. Chopra has a special interest in acute sports injuries, musculoskeletal assessment, and team sports. Native to Calgary, Dr. Chopra enjoys running, hiking and exploring the city on her bike.

DR. Cale moore

Dr. Moore is a family physician in Calgary. He is a proud born and raised Calgarian who completed degrees in Biological Sciences, and Psychology at the University of Calgary. He also worked as an EMT in Calgary for over a decade before moving to Edmonton to complete his MD at the University of Alberta. After completing his family medicine residency in Calgary, he has been working in a general practice with a focus in musculoskeletal and mental health. He enjoys working with patients through all aspects of their injuries from the acute phase, to the mental and physical components of rehabilitation, and through to the return to sport.

Dr. Moore is currently the Lead Physician for SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) Trojans and the Team Physician for the Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

 

His interests outside of medicine include playing all team sports, arguing about the best athletes of all time, exploring the mountains with his family, fitness, and playing music.

Dr. Miles Hunter

Born and raised in Calgary, Dr. Miles Hunter is an Emergency Medicine physician, with a diploma in Sport Medicine. He obtained his education at the University of Calgary, studying biomechanics in the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Kinesiology. He then completed his medical school and residency training in Emergency Medicine, gaining him his Royal College FRCPC designation, with an area of focused training in Sport Medicine

Dr. Hunter's clinical interests include acute sport injuries, evidence-based injury rehabilitation strategies and connecting patients with their optimal care team

Dr. Hunter is currently the Lead Emergency Physician for the Calgary Wranglers of the American Hockey League. 

When not working at Innovative or in the busy Emergency Department at either Foothills Medical Centre or Rockyview General Hospital, Dr. Hunter enjoys playing competitive hockey and baseball in local men's leagues. While accepting that he is on a constant performance decline, he also enjoys skiing, mountain biking or finding a sunny Calgary patio to spend time with his wife and friends

Dr. Veronique Huot

Dr. Veronique Huot is a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician practicing in Calgary. Born and raised in Quebec City, she moved to Calgary in 2010 to pursue her Olympic dream in long track speed skating. While training at the Calgary Olympic Oval, she completed a degree in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary in 2014. Once retired from her skating career, she completed one year of Physiotherapy training at Laval University, Qc, before starting medical school. She graduated with a Doctorate of Medicine and Master in Surgery (MDCM) from McGill University in 2019. She then completed her Family Medicine residency in Calgary, followed by a Sport and Exercise Medicine fellowship. She is certified as a Sport and Exercise Medicine specialist by the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Dr. Huot can provide services in English and in French. She is an avid cyclist, mountain biker and hiker in the summer, and she enjoys downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter. She is also part of a Latin Dance team and has performed at multiple events around the city of Calgary, including the Calgary International Salsa Congress.

Dr. Meaghan Mackenzie

Dr. Meaghan Mackenzie is an Emergency and Sport Medicine Physician in Calgary. She completed medical school at the University of Calgary, and then completed her 5-year residency in Emergency Medicine. As part of her residency, Dr. Mackenzie completed a year of specialized training in Sport and Exercise Medicine. She is certified with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) for her Emergency training, and with the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CASEM) with her Diploma is Sport Medicine. 

 

Dr. Mackenzie's interests include acute sport injuries, pediatric sport medicine and evidence-based injury rehabilitation strategies. Her interests outside of work include team sports, skiing and mountain biking, and travelling with her husband and friends.
